Hello and welcome back to Décorieure. Today’s post applies to any category in this blog: an interior or exterior space, the architecture, the designing, the accessories, and others. It’s about creating spaces for people.

As architects or designers it is very important to know that we are designing a space for someone. When creating it, we should know how would we feel in that space: Is it too small? Is it wheelchair accessible? Does it have enough lighting? Does the kitchen has enough circulation? Does it need a second bathroom? etc. There are millions of questions we have to ask before constructing a project.

Some people who hasn’t study this field believe they can design too, and when they do it without the knowledge, there’s a big possibility they are going to forget some small details that make a big difference. I’m going to tell you a personal story that shows the perfect example of this: Years ago, before I was born, my dad’s family was going to construct the second part of our country house. The place is in a small town where there were not enough regulations so they could do it without an architect. My dad, as an engineering made it’s own design, thinking that he was making the best decision of efficiency, due to the fact that we are such a big family. He designed a central circulation that connected with the 3 of the bedrooms and these bedrooms CONNECTED TO OTHER BEDROOMS. So yes, to go to the second bedroom you have to cross the first one. Not a wise decision but also not the worst one that could be made. Because when someone does not have enough knowledge about something they make mistakes that are common, and designing places are not an easy job because we need to design a place for people.

What does it means to design a place for people?
Have you ever had problems closing the door of a public bathroom because the sections are too small? or you do not have enough illumination in your bedroom for reading? or lack of comfortable places in the park to sit? These are examples of problems that are ignored because of lack of design, of money, and preparation. There’s a big difference on being able to make a place and to make a place that supplies people’s necessities.

How can we avoid these problems?
First of all, it is important to know who you are designing this place for: kids? a couple? public in general?. Analyse their needs, their personality, what they like, and others.
Then, visit similar places and make a list of how you feel in that place. Is it too dark? There’s any place to sit? What would you like to find there? etc. We should write every detail to make sure our project will not have the same problems and that is going to give a better experience for the people who is going to be around it.

Details are very important in every project. For example, creating designed urban amenities in a park, the shapes of the architecture in a mall and the group of accessories in a dining room are just a few of them.

A post to remain everyone that every project we do, it’s more than just creating a beautiful place. The most important is to make them functional and attractive for everyone.
